Successive studies have estimated the success rate of mergers and acquisitions at no more than 50%. This represents an evens bet – the spin of a coin. Accountancy firm Grant Thornton estimated that some £44 billion per annum was spent on buying British businesses between 2000-2003.
A research study conducted by Everymind and Ashridge Business School investigated success criteria for mergers and acquisitions in the marketing communications industry. The study revealed that an ‘ability to execute’ successfully throughout the process of a deal is critical to improving the odds for success.
